Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula (about 6-8 minutes). Drain excess fat.
- Stir in the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté for another 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
- Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Mix well and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- While the mixture is simmering, slice the French or Italian bread in half lengthwise. Place the bread on a baking sheet.
- In a small bowl, combine the softened butter with garlic powder. Spread this mixture evenly over the cut sides of the bread.
- Top each half of the bread with the Sloppy Joe mixture. Then sprinkle both cheeses evenly over the top.
Baking
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the edges of the bread are golden brown.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, then slice into pieces and serve warm.
Notes
Choose a sturdy loaf that can hold the weight of the filling. Consider customizing the cheese mix for more flavor. For healthier options, substitute beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat. Extra flavor can be added with bell peppers or jalapeños.
