Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Mixture
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the Garlic Bread
  • 1 loaf French bread or Italian bread
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional) Optional for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula (about 6-8 minutes). Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté for another 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
  4. Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, chili powder, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Mix well and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. While the mixture is simmering, slice the French or Italian bread in half lengthwise. Place the bread on a baking sheet.
  6. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter with garlic powder. Spread this mixture evenly over the cut sides of the bread.
  7. Top each half of the bread with the Sloppy Joe mixture. Then sprinkle both cheeses evenly over the top.
Baking
  1. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the edges of the bread are golden brown.
  2. Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, then slice into pieces and serve warm.

Notes

Choose a sturdy loaf that can hold the weight of the filling. Consider customizing the cheese mix for more flavor. For healthier options, substitute beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat. Extra flavor can be added with bell peppers or jalapeños.
