Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Biscuit Topping
  • 1 can (16 oz) Cheddar Bay Biscuit mix
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: Add the diced onion and garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Prepare the Sloppy Joe Mixture: Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, salt, and black pepper. Let it simmer for 5 minutes to enhance the flavors.
  5. Assemble the Casserole: Transfer the Sloppy Joe mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
Biscuit Topping
  1. Mix the Biscuit Dough: In a separate bowl, combine the Cheddar Bay Biscuit mix with the milk and stir until just mixed. Avoid over-mixing to keep the biscuits fluffy.
  2. Top the Casserole: Spoon the biscuit mixture over the top of the Sloppy Joe layer evenly.
  3. Add Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the biscuit layer.
Baking
  1. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuit topping is golden brown and cooked through.
  2. Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Tips for making the best casserole include adding vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms, making ahead of time and refrigerating, and customizing with different spices or cheeses.
