Method
Prepare the Dough
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water and sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead the Dough
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
Let It Rise
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Prepare the Sauce
- While the dough is rising, mix the tomato sauce, oregano, garlic powder, and salt in a bowl. Set it aside.
Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.
Shape the Dough
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to remove excess air. Turn it out onto a floured surface and divide it if you want to make two smaller pizzas. Roll or stretch the dough into your desired shape.
Add Sauce and Toppings
- Spread a generous amount of pizza sauce over the shaped dough. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce, then layer on your favorite toppings.
Bake Your Pizza
- Carefully transfer the pizza to the preheated oven (or onto the hot pizza stone, if using). Bake for about 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Cool and Serve
- Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a couple of minutes. Slice it up and enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce!
Notes
Experiment with different types of flour for unique flavor; consider using a pizza stone for a crispy crust; can freeze extra dough for later use.
