Ingredients

For the beef mixture
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • to taste Salt and pepper
For the dumplings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • to taste Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the carrots and celery, and cook for another 5 minutes, allowing the vegetables to soften.
  5. Add the diced tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Dumpling Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk and melted butter until just combined; do not overmix.
  2. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling batter over the simmering beef mixture, covering as much of the surface as possible.
Baking
  1. Transfer the skillet or mixture to a preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the dumplings have risen and are golden brown.
  2. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

Add More Vegetables: Feel free to incorporate other vegetables like peas or green beans. Can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option. For added heat, consider adding chili powder or red pepper flakes. Use store-bought biscuit dough for faster preparation.
