For the mashed potatoes
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • to taste Salt Adjust based on preference.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once heated, add the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
  2. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  3. Stir in the chopped carrots and frozen peas. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until the vegetables begin to soften.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the beef and vegetable mixture, stirring to combine. Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, or until it thickens.
  5. In a pot, boil the cubed potatoes until fork-tender. Drain and mash with milk, butter, and salt until creamy.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a greased baking dish, pour the beef mixture evenly. Top with the mashed potatoes, spreading them smoothly over the top.
  7. Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. This dish pairs wonderfully with a simple salad or crusty bread.

Notes

For quicker preparation, chop the onion and carrots in advance or use pre-chopped vegetables. You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option. This dish can be prepared ahead of time. Assemble the casserole up to 24 hours in advance, refrigerate, and bake when ready to serve. Leftovers can be frozen. Just ensure you store them in an airtight container. Reheat in the oven until warm.
